LAPEER — Inspired Styles Salon & Spa on N. Saginaw Street in Lapeer sustained significant damage Thursday afternoon following a three-alarm fire at the site.

The fire was reported around 2 pm, bringing out Lapeer Fire & Rescue and the Elba Twp. Fire Dept. on the first alarm. A second alarm for manpower and equipment was answered by the Metamora Twp. Fire Dept., while a third alarm brought manpower from the Attica Twp. Fire Dept. to the scene located a few doors south of Church’s Lumber.

At the time of the fire, said Lapeer Fire & Rescue Chief Mike Vogt, there was one employee and two clients in the building. They safely evacuated the building.

Immediately south of Inspired Styles is a four-unit two-story apartment house. An elderly resident in the building evacuated without incident. The apartment house sustained some radiant heat damage to exterior siding, while a mini-van parked next to the building also sustained heat damage.

The front section of a building that included the Inspired Styles Salon & Spa on N. Saginaw Street in Lapeer sustained significant damage as the result of Thursday's fire. A large section of the roof collapsed.

Vogt said the roof collapsed in the front of the building, while the eastern section of the structure was largely spared by the fire. Cause of the fire remains under investigation by Lapeer Fire & Rescue’s fire investigator as well as an insurance company investigator.

Two MedStar ambulance crews were on site for medical standby purposes. Vogt said the medical personnel checked the well-being of firefighters as they exited the building and made sure firefighters kept hydrated on the 90-degree day, compounded by the heavy weight of turnout gear firefighters wear during working structure fires. “We had a couple hot firefighters, but there were no injuries or major issues because of the heat,” said Vogt.

N. Saginaw Street between Genesee and Nepessing streets was closed to thru-traffic while firefighters worked to extinguish the fire. Lapeer Dept. of Public Works employees placed barricades at intersections in the area to assist Lapeer Police Dept. officers with traffic control.

Firefighters cleared the scene around 6:30 pm
