Make it Muscatine: Meows and Barks Pet Supply

MUSCATINE, Iowa–As avid pet lovers, Kelly Cook and Missy Plowman found that they often needed to visit the Quad Cities or Iowa City to get some of the products they needed. “We’ve got to drive clear out of town to get pet supplies,” Cook noted. Realizing that many other people with pets had to go just as far out of their way to get what they needed, they wanted to change that. Beginning this month, their business, Meows and Barks Pet Supply, will start selling a variety of dog treats at the Muscatine Farmers Market as they prepare to open a brick and mortar location with additional products soon.

Meows and Barks Pet Supply will offer a wide selection of specialty products, including homemade dog treats, such as applesauce and peanut better treats and pumpkin oat treats. If people express interest, Meows and Barks may offer CBD pet treats as well. In addition to treats, pet owners can purchase food for exotic pets, leashes and other pet supplies, and natural and health brands of pet food not available at local department or hardware stores. Additionally, as Meows and Barks gets established, Cook and Plowman would like to add an All Paws Pet Wash self-service dog washing station so that people may more easily clean their pets.

While Cook and Plowman search for a permanent home for Meows and Barks, they will sell their homemade treats at the Muscatine Farmers Market, which takes place at the corner of Cedar and Third Streets each Saturday morning. Along with selling their treats, they will also have a suggestion box available for people to put requests for types of products they would like to see in the store. I want to focus on the community here,” said Kelly. Plowman added, “we want to try to have the stuff the big box stores don’t.”

For those who cannot make it out to the Muscatine Farmers Market, Cook welcomes them to contact them using the Meows and Barks Pet Supply Facebook page or by emailing them.

With Meows and Barks getting ready to serve pets and their people in Muscatine, Cook and Plowman feel excited to start sharing their love for animals with the community and to help them get the very best supplies for their own pets. “We all have fur babies and we love them!” Cook excited.

As Plowman put it, she most looks forward to, “really just getting out in the community and seeing where those needs are at and bringing healthy and nutritious food to pets.”

So far, they have greatly appreciated all the help they have gotten as members of the Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce and Industry in making their goals or starting a pet supply store a reality. “I really think it’s going to help us get out in the community,” Cook said. “It also helps us be part of other things in the community and make it better,” she added.
